Are vintage lenses good?
Are vintage lenses good?
Can you use a vintage lens on a modern camera?
Which vintage lenses should I buy?
All good questions that I can answer very easily;
Yeah there's some great lenses out there.
All you need is a cheap adapter from ebay or Amazon. Here's the adapter I used to mount an M42 lens on to my Sony A9 & A7iii; https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B087CPGRVQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And definitely start with the Helios 44-2.
And now for the long bit!
I've got boxes of old vintage lenses and cameras that I've collected over the past 10 years;
Some I've never used, some I've used and said urgh! too and other's that I'll use one day....can anyone tell me when that day will be please?!
The Helios 44-2; It's a legendary lens built by the soviets between 1958 and 1999.
It's manual focus and manual aperture. You're fully in control of this bad boy!
It's famous for it's swirly bokeh!
Swirly bokeh?! What the hell is that?!
The out of focus parts of the image, well, have a slight swirl to them. It's pretty cool!
So why would you use an old vintage lens on a new digital camera?
For that swirly bokeh, the old and slightly flawed aesthetics and for me it's all about the challenge.
Can I use a vintage lens for a photoshoot?
Let's see......
Enter Sarah & William; One of my future wedding couples (when COVID allows!) who were up for a bit of fun with photos.
So, are vintage lenses good? What do you think?
I know that I had a lot of fun challenging myself with an old manual focus lens. Having to nail focus was tricky but I enjoyed the pressure.
The images look cool and what about that swirly bokeh!
